Karnataka May Ban Pan Masala and Gutka Containing Intoxicating Substances, Says Chief Minister D K Shivakumar

Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has warned that Karnataka will ban the sale of pan masala, gutka, chewing tobacco, and similar products if they are found to contain banned intoxicating substances. He made the announcement while addressing the 31st Foundation Day celebrations of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) and the Drug-Free India Conclave in Bengaluru on June 28.

• The Chief Minister said reports indicate that some pan masala, gutka, areca nut, and similar products are allegedly being mixed with intoxicating substances to produce a drug-like effect.

• He warned that if such practices continue, the Karnataka government will ban the sale of all such products in the state.

• The government reiterated its commitment to building a drug-free Karnataka and called for collective efforts to prevent drug abuse, particularly among young people.

• Shivakumar highlighted the role of Karnataka’s Anti-Narcotic Task Force (ANTF), established in 2025, in combating drug trafficking while stressing that stronger border security is also essential to curb the drug trade.

• Addressing medical and paramedical students, he cautioned that a conviction under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act could permanently affect their professional careers by preventing licensing and registration.

• He encouraged students to resist peer pressure and remain vigilant against drug abuse on campuses.

• The Chief Minister also noted that Karnataka has 70 medical colleges and described the state as the country’s medical capital. He announced that Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences will be shifted to a new campus in Bengaluru South district.
