Karnataka DCM Seeks Relaxation of Defence Height Restrictions in Bengaluru

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has urged the Union Defence Ministry to ease building height restrictions around defence airfields in Bengaluru, citing their impact on urban development and construction approvals.

Key Details:

• DCM D.K. Shivakumar met Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi on April 24 and submitted a formal memorandum

• Current rules require No Objection Certificates (NOC) for construction within airport zones

• As per GSR 751(E), building height is capped at 150 metres within a 15 km radius of airports

• Defence authorities have extended this restriction up to 20 km in Bengaluru

• Restrictions apply around HAL Airport and Yelahanka Air Base, both under Defence control

• The state government argues that these extended limits are delaying approvals and affecting development projects

• Request made to review restrictions while balancing aviation safety and urban growth

• Similar concerns have previously been raised with multiple Union government departments
