Once forgotten, Doddabommasandra Lake in Ward 18 has been revived through community effort, CSR support, and civic action. Today, it thrives as a green urban oasis with walking trails, abundant birdlife, and eco-friendly recreation for all.
Once dry and forgotten, Doddabommasandra Lake has emerged as a shining example of what citizen participation and sustained civic efforts can achieve. Spanning 124 acres in the heart of Ward 11, this urban lake now thrives as a green space supporting clean water, rich biodiversity, and a peaceful recreation zone for the local community.
Location & Legacy
Nestled near Vidyaranyapura Main Road and BEL Circle, Doddabommasandra Lake has a history of over 300 years, originally built for irrigation. Over time, encroachment, pollution, and neglect drained the lake of its vitality. But with persistent efforts from the community and civic authorities, the lake has been brought back to life, reclaiming its role as an ecological and social landmark.
Rejuvenation Milestones
The revival of Doddabommasandra Lake is a testament to collaborative governance, involving BBMP, Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), local leaders, and volunteers. Key interventions include:
- Installation of a 10 MLD sewage treatment plant (STP) providing daily clean, treated water
- Development of a 4 km walking track for fitness and leisure
- Plantation of 1,500+ trees to boost green cover
- Creation of a bird haven, attracting 45+ bird species
- Establishment of a tree park, gazebos, and children’s play areas
- Clearing encroachments and restoring lake boundaries
This transformation was made possible through citizen engagement, CSR funding, and dedicated civic governance. Special appreciation goes to local MLAs, MPs, the BBMP Lakes Department, and community groups like Friends of Lakes for making this vision a reality.
Biodiversity & Public Use
Today, Doddabommasandra Lake is home to thriving fish and bird life, providing a clean and safe habitat. The lake attracts residents for:
- Morning walks and exercise
- Birdwatching and nature photography
- Community events and gatherings
Additionally, a dedicated eco-friendly pond for Ganesha idol immersion demonstrates how tradition and sustainability can coexist beautifully.
