DCM Seeks Relaxation of Building Height Restrictions Near Defence Airfields

Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has requested the Union Defence Ministry to review and relax building height restrictions around defence airfields in Bengaluru, citing their impact on urban development.

Key Details:

• DCM D K Shivakumar met Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi on April 24

• A memorandum was submitted requesting revision of current construction height norms

• Current rules require No Objection Certificates (NOC) for construction within a 20 km radius of defence airports

• As per GSR 751(E), the 150-metre height limit is officially applicable within a 15 km radius

• State officials highlighted that restrictions are being extended up to 20 km in Bengaluru

• HAL Airport and Yelahanka Air Base fall under Defence Department control

• The state government stated that these restrictions are affecting development in central urban areas

• Request made to balance aviation safety with urban growth needs

• Similar concerns have been previously raised with the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Defence authorities
