Profile Overview
D.K. Shivakumar, currently Poised to take over as the state’s new Chief Minister, has played a major role in Karnataka politics for over four decades. From his early involvement in student politics to becoming one of the Congress party’s key strategists in Karnataka, Shivakumar has held several importantministerial portfolios and led multiple political and organizational campaigns.



Current Roles and Responsibilities

- Minister in charge of Bengaluru Urban Development
He also serves as the President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) since 2020.



Electoral and Legislative Journey:
- 1985 Assembly Election
Contested against senior Janata Dal leader H.D. Deve Gowda from the then Sathanur Assembly constituency.
- Though unsuccessful, he emerged as a strong political challenger.
- 1987
Elected as a member of the Bengaluru Rural Zilla Panchayat.
- 1989 Assembly Election
Won from Sathanur constituency as a Congress candidate with a significant margin.
- 1991
Appointed as a minister in the Karnataka government under Chief Minister S. Bangarappa.
- Handled the Prisons Department.
- 1994
Won the election as a rebel Congress candidate after internal opposition denied him party support.
- 1999
Defeated H.D. Kumaraswamy in the Assembly election.
- Appointed Cabinet Minister and given the Co-operation portfolio under Chief Minister S.M. Krishna.



D. K. Shivakumar has over three decades of legislative experience in Karnataka. During his tenure, he has held key ministerial positions and party leadership roles at the state level.
Ministerial Roles and Governance
- Urban Development Minister (2002)
Served as Chairman of the State Urban Planning Board.
- Played a role in youth empowerment initiatives such as:
Rajiv Yuva Shakti programs
- Women self-help group expansion
- Energy Minister (2013)
- Introduced reforms in Karnataka’s power sector.
- Cancelled several disputed power purchase agreements.
- Launched the Raitha Surya Scheme, enabling farmers to produce solar energy on their land.
- Water Resources Minister (2018 onwards)
- Worked on major irrigation and water projects including:

- Ettinahole Project
- Mahadayi issue
- Promoted construction of check dams across Karnataka.
- Deputy Chief Minister (2023–2026)
