Commissioner Directs Immediate Measures to Prevent Sewage Inflow into Uttarahalli Lake

The Bengaluru South City Corporation has initiated corrective measures to address sewage contamination and encroachments around Uttarahalli Lake following an inspection by Commissioner K. N. Ramesh on June 22.

• Commissioner K. N. Ramesh conducted an inspection of Uttarahalli Lake under Bengaluru South City Corporation.

• Local representatives reported that sewage water and stormwater are mixing and entering the lake, leading to pollution and foul odor.

• Officials were instructed to repair damaged retaining walls and ensure sewage is diverted through pipelines to the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP).

• Treated water is to be discharged through pipelines into the stormwater drain outside the lake.

• Weed removal and bio-purification measures were ordered to reduce odor and maintain water quality until the lake development DPR is prepared.

• Desilting of the stormwater drain and removal of blockages across the canal were directed to facilitate smooth water flow.

• BWSSB officials were instructed to replace undersized pipelines, restart the suspended STP work, and prevent sewage from entering the stormwater drain.

• Corporation officials were asked to create barriers to ensure only stormwater enters the lake after treatment measures are implemented.

• A survey of Civic Amenity (CA) sites near the lake was ordered, along with notices to encroachers and removal of unauthorized structures.

• Following complaints regarding Poornaprajna Layout park, officials were directed to install wire fencing to prevent encroachment and illegal activities.
