Bengaluru East City Corporation has announced the formation of sub-division level Urban Flood Management Teams to strengthen flood preparedness, response, and infrastructure protection ahead of the monsoon.

Key Details:

  • Commissioner D.S. Ramesh chaired an inter-departmental coordination meeting on April 28
  • Immediate formation of Urban Flood Management Teams across all sub-divisions
  • Teams will be led by Assistant Executive Engineers (AEE) as nodal officers
  • Multi-department coordination includes:
  • BWSSB
  • BESCOM
  • Traffic Police
  • Forest Department
  • Health and Revenue officials
  • Disaster Management authorities
  • Railways (where applicable)

Key Responsibilities:

  • AEE (Sub-Division Lead):

Maintain flood vulnerability registers

  • Ensure desilting of drains and canals before monsoon
  • Monitor waterlogging points and deploy pumps
  • Complete pending drainage works
  • Conduct field inspections and submit daily reports
  • BWSSB:

Fix pipeline-related obstructions and trench cuts

  • Restore damaged drains and coordinate excavation works
  • BESCOM:

Ensure uninterrupted power for pumps and flood response systems

  • Address electrical safety risks in flood-prone areas
  • Traffic Police:

Plan diversions and regulate traffic in waterlogged areas

  • Manage closures of underpasses and low-lying roads
  • Forest Department:

Identify and remove hazardous trees

  • Maintain emergency response teams for tree clearance
  • Health Department:

Clear silt and waste from drains

  • Maintain sanitation in flood-prone areas
  • Revenue Department:

Support removal of encroachments affecting drainage

  • Provide land records for infrastructure work
  • Disaster Management:

Coordinate emergency response and rescue operations

  • Conduct mock drills and public awareness
  • Electrical Teams:

Maintain pumps, generators, and dewatering equipment

  • Ensure readiness for emergency deployment
  • Railway Authorities:

Coordinate drainage in railway underpasses and corridors

  • Control Room Teams:

Maintain 24/7 communication and complaint handling

  • Track rainfall, flooding incidents, and response time

Enforcement:

  • Superintendent Engineers will monitor team performance
  • Strict disciplinary action warned for delays or negligence
