SPORTS QUOTA IN KARNATAKA GOVERNMENT JOBS – DRAFT AMENDMENT PROPOSED

The Government of Karnataka has published draft amendments to the Karnataka Civil Services (General Recruitment) Rules, 1977 proposing a dedicated 2% reservation for Sports Achievers in direct recruitment to State Government services. The proposal was notified on 22 May 2026 and has been placed in the public domain for objections and suggestions.

Key Highlights

2% Reservation Across Categories
The reservation will apply within General Merit, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes categories in direct recruitment.

Who Qualifies as a Sports Achiever?
A candidate must:

  • Be domiciled in Karnataka for at least 10 years.
  • Have represented Karnataka in at least one National Championship or National Games.
  • Have participated in recognized National or International sporting events, either individually or as part of a team.

34 Recognized Sports Included
The list covers major disciplines such as Athletics, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Kabaddi, Chess, Swimming, Tennis, Volleyball, Wrestling, Boxing, Shooting, Weightlifting and several others.

Performance-Based Weightage Marks
Sports achievers will receive weightage marks based on their highest achievement. Olympic and Paralympic medalists receive the highest weightage, followed by achievements in Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championships, National Games and National Championships.

Merit Calculation
For recruitments involving examinations, 50% of the marks obtained in the qualifying or competitive examination will be combined with the sports weightage marks to determine merit under the sports quota.

Why This Matters

The proposed amendment seeks to create a structured pathway for sportspersons to enter public service while recognizing sporting excellence as a valuable contribution to society. If finalized, the amendment could encourage greater participation in competitive sports and provide long-term career opportunities for athletes representing Karnataka and India.

Status: Draft notification published on 22.05.2026. The Government has invited objections and suggestions before finalizing the amendment.
