Safe Pedestrian Campaign to Begin Across GBA from July 1

The Greater Bengaluru Development (GBA) Department has announced a citywide “Safe Pedestrian Campaign” starting July 1 to remove encroachments from footpaths and improve pedestrian safety. The campaign will also include action against abandoned vehicles, repairs to footpaths, scientific pothole filling, and stricter enforcement on illegal parking and street vending along priority roads.

• Campaign Start: July 1, 2026

• Shop owners have until July 1 to voluntarily remove encroachments from footpaths.

• After the deadline, authorities will remove encroachments and impose penalties as per regulations.

• The campaign will initially focus on approximately 2,000 km of arterial and sub-arterial roads across the GBA.

• Parking on footpaths will not be permitted, and illegally parked vehicles will be towed.

• Notices will be issued from July 1 to owners of abandoned vehicles parked on roadsides.

• Vehicles that remain unclaimed for seven days after notice will be removed through towing from July 10, followed by the auction process where applicable.

• Around ₹70 crore has been allocated to repair deficiencies in nearly 2,000 km of footpaths across the city’s five corporations.

• Repair works will include fixing damaged slabs, kerb stones, and uneven levels.

• Street vending on footpaths and along arterial and sub-arterial roads will not be permitted from July 1. Enforcement action and fines will be imposed for violations.

• Officials have been directed to adopt scientific box-cutting methods for pothole repairs to ensure durable road restoration.

• Priority has also been given to repairing major junctions, traffic signals, and removing unnecessary speed humps near signalized intersections.

• Authorities have been instructed to prevent buses and other vehicles from stopping within 75 metres of traffic signals.
