GBA to Implement Supreme Court Order on Stray Dogs; Compliance Measures Announced

The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has stated that it is committed to implementing the Supreme Court’s order dated 19-05-2026 in the suo-motu writ petition concerning stray dog management. The authority has outlined measures including relocation of stray dogs from institutional premises, development of shelters, and regulated action in accordance with animal welfare laws.

Key Details:

• The GBA will comply with the Supreme Court order issued on 19-05-2026 in Suo Motu Writ Petition (Civil) No. 5 of 2025 titled “City Hounded by Strays, Kids Pay Price.”

• Standard operating procedures for animal welfare will be implemented for managing stray dogs in public and institutional areas.

• Stray dogs will be relocated from identified premises including:

Educational institutions

• Hospitals

• Sports complexes

• Bus stands

• Railway stations

• Construction of stray dog shelters is currently underway across five city corporations under the GBA.

• Selection of service providers for shelter management is in progress.

• Dogs from identified premises will be moved to designated shelters.

• In areas with high stray dog population or repeated bite incidents, action will be taken based on veterinary certification and applicable laws, including:

Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960

• Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023

• Cases involving incurably ill, rabid, or aggressive/dangerous dogs may be addressed through legal procedures, including euthanasia where permitted under law.

• Citizens and institutions have been advised not to take individual decisions regarding stray dogs, and to allow authorities to act within the legal framework.
