GBA Speeds Up World Bank-Funded Stormwater Drain Works Across Bengaluru

The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has accelerated stormwater drain development works being undertaken with World Bank funding across multiple locations in Bengaluru ahead of the monsoon season. The projects include reconstruction, strengthening, and expansion of rainwater drains to prevent flooding and improve water flow capacity.

Key Details:

• The project is being implemented under World Bank funding of ₹2,000 crore.

• Works include:

Conversion of 173 km of kaccha rainwater drains into RCC-lined drains with retaining walls.

• Strengthening of 80 km of existing stormwater drains.

• Officials from the World Bank and the Project Implementation Unit conducted inspections at several project sites on May 07.

• S.V. Rajesh, Chief Engineer of the Project Implementation Unit, stated that works are being expedited before the monsoon season.

Site Inspection Updates

Silk Board Junction:

• Drain capacity expansion work is underway to prevent waterlogging.

• Existing drain width is being increased from 1.5 meters to 3.5 meters.

• Steel gratings are being installed.

• First phase is nearing completion and will soon reopen for vehicular movement.

• Remaining culvert sections will be completed before the monsoon.

Anjanapura:

• Retaining wall construction along the canal is in progress.

• Out of 250 meters, 180 meters of work has been completed.

• Remaining work is expected to finish within 15 days.

Gandhinagar:

• Box drain work near Zion Church is underway.

• Total project length: 188 meters.

• Completed work: 33 meters.

• Remaining work will be expedited.

Madiwala Lake:

• Inspection conducted for installation of sluice gates at the lake.

Official Direction:

• World Bank representatives instructed officials to:

Ensure safety measures at all work sites.

• Complete projects within the stipulated timeline.
