GBA Launches Swachh Survekshan 2025–26 Initiative; Six Ambassadors Appointed to Boost Bengaluru’s Cleanliness Ranking

The Greater Bengaluru Authority launched preparations for Swachh Survekshan 2025–26 with the appointment of six ambassadors to promote public participation in cleanliness initiatives. Officials emphasized improved waste segregation, recycling and citizen cooperation to help the city secure a higher national ranking.

Key Details

• Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao inaugurated the programme at Sir Puttanna Chetty Town Hall.

• The event was organised by Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) under the Greater Bengaluru Authority.

• The initiative aims to implement action plans for Swachh Survekshan 2025–26 through public awareness and participation.

• Currently, 45–50% of Bengaluru’s waste is being recycled, and authorities aim to increase this through improved processing methods.

• Planned waste management measures include:

Composting organic waste at the source

• Sending plastic waste to power plants

• Supplying low-value plastic (RDF) to cement factories to obtain Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) credits

• Authorities aim to gradually reduce waste sent to landfills through improved reuse and recycling methods over the next 3–4 years.

• The number of compactors transporting waste to landfills has reduced from 400 to 260.

• Rajajinagar has achieved about 95% waste segregation, while the Chamarajapet transfer station is operating effectively.

• Officials were instructed to conduct awareness campaigns in areas with low waste segregation.

• Abhilash Nair – Social activist

Additional Highlights

• Citizens were encouraged to participate as cleanliness ambassadors and support awareness activities.

• Ten sanitation workers, supervisors and citizens were honoured as Swachhata Champions.

• Officials, ambassadors and sanitation workers took a cleanliness pledge during the programme.

• A short awareness film on Swachh Survekshan 2025–26 was screened.
