CM D.K. Shivakumar Submits Metro and RRTS Proposals to Union Government

Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Wednesday met Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs *Manohar Lal Khattar in New Delhi and submitted a set of proposals seeking approvals for Bengaluru Metro projects and the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS).*

Key Details:

• Approval sought for Double-Decker Metro Corridor

BMRCL has proposed a 44.65-km double-decker elevated structure under Metro Phase III.

• The Central Government had granted approval for the project on September 13, 2024.

• Karnataka will bear the entire project cost of ₹9,700 crore.

• Minor modifications approved during BMRCL’s 118th board meeting on January 19, 2026, require fresh clearance from the Centre before implementation.

• Revised Cost Approval for Metro Phase II

The Centre had approved Metro Phase II on February 21, 2014, with an estimated cost of ₹26,405.14 crore.

• The 72.095-km network includes 61 stations.

• The revised project cost has increased to ₹40,425.02 crore, an escalation of ₹14,019.88 crore.

• Karnataka has requested early approval for the revised estimate.

• Approval Requested for Metro Phase IIIA

The proposed Sarjapur-Hebbal corridor will span 37.804 km.

• It includes 14.28 km of underground section and 23.524 km of elevated corridor.

• Following changes suggested by the Centre, a revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) with an estimated cost of ₹25,999 crore was submitted on April 29, 2026.

• The state government has sought expedited approval for the project.

• Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) Proposal

• Bengaluru-Kanakapura

• Bengaluru-Tumakuru

• Bengaluru-Chikkaballapur
