Health Minister Reiterates '7,000 HIV-Positive Students' Claim False; Two-Month IEC Campaign from 12 August
Health and Family Welfare Minister U.T. Khader clarified at a press briefing on 1 August 2026 that the claim of HIV infection among 7,000 college students is false, said the 56,000 figure is only a NACO estimate, and announced an Intensified IEC awareness campaign across Karnataka from 12 August to 11 October, along with a national-level HIV/AIDS conference in Bengaluru.
Minister for Health and Family Welfare U.T. Khader held a press briefing on 1 August 2026 at Arogya Soudha to set the record straight on HIV-related misinformation circulating in sections of the media, and to share updates on the State's HIV programme and blood bank centres.
The Clarifications
- The claim that HIV infection was found among 7,000 college students is false — college students are not classified as a separate category in HIV data at all.
- The figure of 56,000 HIV-positive cases is an estimate by the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), not an exact count.
- Details of persons tested for HIV are recorded in the SOCH portal (Strengthening Overall Care for HIV Beneficiaries).

What's Coming
- An Intensified IEC Campaign for HIV awareness will run across the State for two months, from International Youth Day, 12 August 2026, to 11 October 2026, focused on youth and the general public.
- A national/regional-level HIV/AIDS conference will be organised in Bengaluru on the Minister's direction.
- The mascot campaign and statewide competition continue, alongside awareness advertisements on dating apps for high-risk groups.
Programme Updates
All pregnant women are tested for HIV with their consent; where infection is detected, ART (Anti-Retroviral Therapy) is started immediately to ensure the birth of an HIV-free baby. In the last three months, 3,091 HIV infections were detected among general clients and 111 among pregnant women. More than 3,000 people scanned the 'Know Your Health Status' QR code in July 2026 — the highest QR-scan count in the country.
